The Value of Social Support in Accessing Education and Employment for People with Mental Health Problems
Tuesday November 19th 2013, 1 to 2.15pm, City University, London.
City University's Division of Health Services, Research, and Management invites you to their November Disability and Social Inclusion Seminar
Speaker: Jonathan Leach, Lecturer in Mental Health at the Open University and Chair of Tandem, a mental health befriending organisation in Oxford
Relationships with other people can be very important for both accessing and staying in education and employment. Social support exists in everyday interactions with friends, colleagues, tutors, managers and others involved in education and employment. However, people with a history of mental health problems often report a lack of social contacts and sometimes experiences of interactions with others that are far from supportive. This seminar will explore why social support is vitally important for mental health and how it might be developed in the context of further/higher education and employment settings.
Previously Jonathan was project manager/research for the Oxford Student Mental Health Network, Lecturer in Vocational Rehabilitation at City University, past chair of the National Vocational Rehabilitation Association and spent 10 years working in the mental health sector supporting service users into education and employment. Jonathan is currently working on a new book Social Support for Mental Health: Building Positive and Empowering Relationships for publication by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.
